5th & 6th Classes

5th and 6th Classes have been very busy over the past few weeks. Take a look at what they have been working on.

STEM Primary Outreach Program

The boys and girls in 5th and 6th Classes took part in a STEM Primary School Outreach Program in association with Boston Scientific. They had a wonderful opportunity to gain an insight into the running of Boston Scientific, Galway. We owe a special thanks to Keith Quinn and Greg Delahunt who presented so much information to the children. They learned about:

-The importance of Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths in the everyday world.

-Devices that are made by Boston Scientific.

-How these devices are inserted into the body.

-The importance of hygiene in a medical manufacturing company.

-How to keep our hearts healthy.

The children had many questions which were answered very clearly by both Keith and Greg. They all enjoyed the presentation very much and we are very grateful to have been given the opportunity to take part.

World Book Day:

On Thursday March 3rd we celebrated “World Book Day” in Geashill NS. The children all brought in their favourite books and we spent some time reading quietly. The children then designed their own bookmarks, completed famous author word searches and shared their book recommendations with their peers. They then received a  book token that can be used to buy a new book.

Visit to Coláiste Choilm, Tullamore

The teachers and pupils at Coláiste Choilm Tullamore very kindly invited 5th and 6th classes to attend their school production of “Snow White”. We were delighted to accept the invitation and the children thoroughly enjoyed the panto. We received such a warm welcome and the children laughed and sang along to the songs from start to finish. The students and teachers involved put on a magnificent show and we are very grateful to them for the opportunity to attend.

VEX IQ Competition:

The students in 5th and 6th classes are preparing for a robotics competition which will take place in Tullamore in the coming weeks. They have designed and built two robots. One is called FlingBot and the other is called ClawBot.  The children have each had opportunities to drive the robots and some children are busy programming and modifying them. It has been a great learning experience for the whole class and we are certainly looking forward to the competition.

History Projects:

Our most recent S.E.S.E topic has been “The Great Irish Famine”. We examined various aspects of the famine including the potato blight, workhouses, absentee landlords, soup kitchens and coffin ships. The children carried out some independent research and created projects which they presented in front of their peers. They all did an amazing job and should be very proud.

Tag Rugby:

For the last number of weeks the children have been coached in tag-rugby. This is something they all really looked forward to on a Tuesday. They made a great effort and some children have since joined the local rugby club. Well done and a special thank you to their coach John.

Gaeilge:

Tá na daltaí ag obair go dian ar theanga ó bhéal. Tá siad ag freagairt ceisteanna agus ag caint le chéile sa rang go minic. Tá siad ag eirí níos muiníneach. Maith sibh.
