Conor: Is cinrialtán é.

  It is a remote control.

Athraíonn sé na cainéil ar an teilifíseán.

It changes channels on the television.

Tá cúpla ceann againn sa bhaile.

We have a couple of them at home.

Rac:    Bhí cianrialtán mar sin again ar Phlainéad Ceoil fadó, fadó.

Maths:

3rd Class- Page 164 Answer questions 1, 2, 3

Remember :

Total area means add

….Greater than….means subtract.

Always take the smaller number away from the bigger number.

4th Class-Look at page 162

Today we are looking at square metres (m²).

Each side of a square metre is 1 metre in length.

Answer question 1. Would you use cm² or m² to find the area of the different items.

Now answer question 2. Let each square of your Maths copy stand for 1m².

Draw a rectangle 15 squares long and 10 squares wide.  Follow the instructions a-f and draw the shop layout.

Challenge: Can you think of a quick way to work out the total area of the shop?

Area= length x width

For example,

Length= 7m

Width=3m

7 rows of 3 =21

Area= 7m x 3m= 21m²

When we multiply (cm x cm) or (m x m) the answer is always cm² or m²

Maths: This week we are looking at Area and Perimeter.

3rd & 4th Classes

First of all we are going to look at the area of different shapes using playing cards(I hope you have a pack of cards in your house. If not, football or pokemon cards will do!)

Look at the front cover of a copy. Estimate and record how many cards will cover it. Lay the cards on the copy cover. Try not to let them overlap. Some cards may be sticking over the edge. If more than half of the card is still on the copy, count it. If less than half is on the copy, don’t.

Repeat this with your Maths book. Remember to estimate first.

Finally repeat it with a small table in your house.

Here is an example of a surface area record table to use or copy.

Science:

Science All Around Me pg. 52, 53  Heat Wave

When heat spreads through something solid, scientists say that it is conducted.

When using hot water always ask for an adult’s help. Do not use boiling water.

Try one of the following experiments.

Experiment 1 on page 52. Use a big metal spoon or metal skewer or palette knife instead of a metal ruler. You can use your plastic ruler to measure where you place the butter. Make sure the three pieces of butter are above the water line.

Experiment 2 page 53.

Very few of you will have a metal, wooden and plastic ruler, so using spoons will work too.  It is very important to make it a fair test. Put the handle of the spoons into the water. Put one piece of butter on each spoon.Make sure the butter is placed at exactly the same distance above the water line. Use a ruler to measure each one. The butter that melts first is on the best conductor of heat. Predict the best before you begin. Good luck.

Here is a record sheet to use of copy. Heat Experiment1,2

Before you get down to work a couple of things.
First, Ms. Leonard is arranging our Active School Week (at home!) for next week. We need as many of you as possible to take part and engage in 60 mins of activity each day. Today we are going to learn about another type of bullying – cyberbullying – and how to prevent and deal with it.

Bullying that happens online or by phone is called cyberbullying.

Cyberbullying can include:

– Sending nasty messages, photos or pictures from your phone, laptop, tablet or gaming device using Facebook, Xbox, Playstation or other messaging service – Pretending to be someone else and posting things online that makes that person look bad or causes arguments

– Spreading lies, gossip or rumours by text or online. – Sending mean, embarrassing or private texts or photos of someone onto other people

– ‘Liking’ nasty comments about or photos of someone

– Using phone or internet to deliberately exclude someone from the group.

It is important to remember that placing a once-off offensive or nasty comment, picture or image on a public site, such as Facebook, is bullying.

Fill in this worksheet first.

Now watch these short videos.

What is cyberbullying?

Vicky’s Party

Write the text message that Siobhan could send to Vicky or to the other girls to help sort things out.

What could you do if you were cyberbullied? What are my online safety rules? – Who could I tell if I was worried, upset or frightened by something online?

Remember

– Be careful with whom you share your phone number

– Do not put up online personal information, for example, full name, address or other personal details.

– Remember that any photos or images you put online can never be fully removed

– Do not believe that everyone you meet online is who they say they are

– Always tell a trusted adult if you are worried about something you see online – If you are being bullied or see others being bullied online tell a trusted adult

– Never reply to upsetting or frightening messages – save them, show them to an adult and get them to report the matter

– If you receive nasty messages by text or online or photos/pictures, avoid looking at them over and over again as this can be very upsetting. Block the sender so they cannot have access to your photos or personal information and tell a trusted adult

– Remember that if necessary, you can change your phone number by getting a new sim card.

Golden Rule

STOP, BLOCK, TELL

STOP – don’t reply to the message but do take a screen shot

BLOCK– block the sender

TELL – a trusted adult

Listen to the STOP, BLOCK,  TELL rap here.

On the RTE Home School Hub today they are looking at the counties of Munster in Geography for 3rd & 4th classes. There is also a drama activity for 1st & 2nd classes. 5th & 6th are looking at self image in SPHE.

SPHE:  Types of Bullying

Today we are going to learn about some of the reasons why a person, even though it is never their fault, might be bullied. We will learn about different kinds of identity-based bullying.

A person’s‘identity’ – the individual characteristics by which a person is recognised, for example, name, race, religion and family. In other words, the things that make me who I am!

Sometimes people are bullied because they are considered to be different – they are bullied because of their identity.

Can you think of how someone might be bullied because of their identity. Examples could include:

-Making fun of or mimicking physical appearance or speech

– Refusing to work or play with someone or to sit next to them

– Insulting someone’s family

– Name calling, slagging, verbally abusing

– Physical threats or attacks

– Writing nasty messages about someone

– Giving someone ‘the look’

– Getting others to name call or exclude.

We are going to look a little bit more closely at racist bullying, homophobic bullying and bullying because of disability, all of which are identity-based bullying.
Racist bullying is when someone is bullied because of the colour of their skin, their language, their ethnic grouping, or their religious or cultural practices.

– Pretending not to understand what someone is saying or mimicking what someone is saying

– Making fun of the way someone walks or talks

– Slagging someone about the colour of their skin

– Making fun of a person’s clothes

– Mocking someone’s religious observance

Homophobic/gender-related bullying behaviours

– Making fun of someone because of the games they like to play or the activities they engage in, for example, calling a girl nasty names because she likes to do things that are considered to be ‘boy’ things, and vice versa, slagging a boy for playing with toys that are considered ‘girlie.’

– Making fun of how someone walks, talks or dresses

– Calling someone ‘gay’ just to hurt and upset them (it is important to  understand that some people are gay and being gay is ok, but it is not ok to use that word to hurt or embarrass someone)

Bullying because of disability or special educational needs

Remember, rolling a number on a dice is totally random. If it wasn’t, each number would be rolled exactly the same number of times. Whatever you record on your sheet or copy is the right answer.

SPHE:

Today we are going to talk about bullying and the ways in which it can hurt us.
Sometimes people use the word ‘bullying’ to refer to all kinds of bad and unacceptable behaviour. It important that we understand that when we talk about bullying we are talking about behaviour that is hurtful, repeated and deliberate.

Bullying IS:

HURTFUL – can hurt you physically, your belongings or your feelings REPEATED – it happens more than once

DELIBERATE – the person intends to cause hurt.

In order to help us to understand this, we are going to look at a video and see if we can identify what is and what isn’t bullying.

Do you wanna be on my team? (Part 1)

Consider these questions: (You do not have to write the answers)

How do you think Jason feels when Michael says he is useless at football?

How do you think his friend Kevin feels?

Was Kevin right to go off with Michael and leave Jason out?

Was it wrong to leave Jason out?

What could each boy have done differently?

Now, we have looked at the video and we saw how badly Jason was treated. Do you think Jason was bullied?

Was the behaviour hurtful? (yes)

Was it repeated? (no)

Was it deliberate? (yes)

Therefore, while it is bad and wrong, it is not bullying.

Do you wanna be on my team? (Part 2)

Think about what each boy has learned from this.

What have we learned from this?

Here is a poster for you to draw or colour.

The Celts.

To learn more about them watch a video here.

The Celts loved to celebrate. Read the information below and then do the activity.

The Celts lived in ringforts. If stone was used to build the fort, it was called a dún or cathair. If earth was used it was called a rath or lios.

Can you think of any placenames that begin with these words?

One example to start you off is Raheen or Ráithín in Irish which means small ringfort.

Watch here to see how The Celts built their houses.
